We Made It!

Gemma and I survived our first international journey as just the two of us! The trip threw us some curveballs, but I feel if I made it through this, I can survive the journeys to come no problem.

Unfortunately, before we left our place on Friday, Gemma threw up pretty much everything she had eaten all day. She had had an episode of this on Tuesday and Wednesday also with a decreased appetite all week. I don't know if it was a bug, the side effect of trialling her off of her reflux medication, or due to constipation. She had a good day on Thursday, so I was hopeful we were in the clear for travelling. Unfortunately we weren't. She got sick three times on the flight from Dublin to Chicago. Luckily two ladies from Texas, one of whom was a nurse, jumped to my aide each time. And, Gemma still managed to keep a smile on her face!

In addition to getting sick, Gemma only slept for one 30 minute nap and one 45 minute nap during the 8 1/2 hour flight. By the time we landed in Chicago, our bodies felt as if it was 1am, and Gemma was delirious with tiredness. There was a huge line at customs, and I was afraid we were going to miss our connecting flight, as our flight was an hour late getting in. Luckily, I learned that our flight to Minnesota was also going to be delayed. Gemma and I went through security at the next terminal, got to our gate, and I got her to sleep again for another little catnap before a loud announcement woke her. Our flight was delayed another hour, then eventually cancelled.

By the time I got Gemma back in the stroller and all of our gear loaded up, we were one of the last people to get to the customer service desk for rebooking and accommodation for the night. Again, the line was long. At this point, I must have looked totally defeated, because a young woman from near the front of the line came back and got me and brought us in front of her. The two ladies in front of her then let us to the very front of the line. The agent did his best to make our arrangements quickly, but by this time Gemma was near meltdown. Two other United agents were trying to help as well, asking if there was anything they could get for Gemma.

The plan was that the airline would put us up for the night in a hotel, and we were on a 10:40am flight the next day. We were also given meal vouchers. We just had to make our way to the shuttle center to get the shuttle to the hotel. During this walk, Gemma FINALLY crashed and fell into a deep sleep. She slept during the van journey and as I got checked in. I gave her a quick bottle once we got to our room around 10:15pm (4:15am to our bodies), and we both crashed.

Gemma was awake a little after 6 the next morning. We got up, I fed Gemma, got ready and packed up. I was trying to find bottled water for Gemma, but all the vending machines were sold out. I asked at the front desk, and they were out as well. I was told there was a convenience store across the road, but it was a busy highway and a cold morning. The front desk attendant said to leave Gemma with her, as she was used to taking care of kids! I did this and made a quick dash to the store.

On the shuttle trip back to the airport, we met an angel of a woman who was also supposed to be on our cancelled flight and was going to be on the flight with us that day. She was a mother of five and also worked with children. She stayed with us the entire time in the airport, and we were even able to switch seats and sit next to each other on the plane. She got Gemma to sleep both while waiting in the airport and on the plane! I felt I had witnessed a miracle! She was with us until we met up with mom and Margo in Minneapolis.

We got to Margo and Justin's a little after 1pm. Gemma played for a bit, had a bottle, then went down for a nap around 2:30pm. I had to wake her at 4pm because she probably thought she was down for the night. She went back to bed at 6pm and woke at 3:30am, but this was just due to hunger, as she had refused bottles most of the day and had only had 6 ounces of formula, half a banana, and some Cheerios all day. She fell back asleep and slept until 7:20am this morning! She took two naps around her normal times and went to bed at 6pm again, which has been normal back in Ireland as well. Fingers crossed she'll sleep through the night tonight!

There were so many acts of kindness shown to Gemma and me during our journey. In addition to the ones mentioned above, there were many others. Gemma was wonderful too. Despite getting sick and not getting much sleep, she still managed to charm everyone around her. One of the Aer Lingus staff in Dublin even took a photo with her! Below are some of our pics from the journey.

8 Months!

Gemma was 2/3 of a year old yesterday! This past month has been a period of huge development for Gemma. She now:

-Finally has a tooth! Her bottom left one popped through this past Saturday, and I think the one next to it isn't too far behind.

-Babbles like crazy. She says 'ba', 'da', 'ga', 'ah', and 'ha'.

-Creeps on her tummy, gets up on her hands and knees and rocks back and forth, and she can do one 'lunge' forward at a time from the hands and knees position. If she sees something she wants, it doesn't take long for her to get to it!

-Sits fairly well without support, but I wouldn't leave her by herself sitting just yet.

-Gemma's favorite things to play with at the moment aren't toys at all. She likes paper, paper bags, boxes, the laundry basket, a tin of Vaseline, slippers, shoes, and the springy door stops! She also wants the remote controls and mobile phones!

-Prefers finger foods (especially plums, pears, bananas, toast, Cheerios, noodles, and cooked carrots) over puréed or mashed food from the spoon.

-Likes to play peek-a-boo and where's Gemma? (We put a blanket or burp rag over her head, and she pulls it off).

-Makes more noises with her mouth, and she especially likes to do this when eating, spraying food all over!

-Continues to sleep at least 12 continuous hours at night and takes 3 or 2 naps during the day depending on their lengths. Nap lengths are still fairly variable- some days they are 40 minutes, some days an hour and a half.

-Weighs 22 pounds, 7 ounces (we had a follow up with the paediatrician yesterday regarding Gemma's reflux and milk protein intolerance- we're going to try and go off the medication and just continue with the special formula).

-Continues to be a happy, content little girl with a bit of an independent streak! She likes to be goofy and will imitate noises that we make. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful little girl.

Gemma and I are getting ready for another trip to Minnesota! We leave next Friday, April 19th and will be staying until May 29th. Wish us luck for the journey!

10 Days in Mayo

A week ago Saturday, on March 23, Paul, Gemma, and I drove down to Louisburgh for Gemma and I to spend the week before Easter with Paul's parents and sister (she had time off of work and was visiting too). We figured that since we were going to go for the Easter weekend, we may as well make the drive worth it and stay longer! There was nothing keeping Gemma and me in Dublin, and it was great to have the company during the day and to spend time with family. I even got a couple afternoons out on my own. Paul came back to Louisburgh on Good Friday, and Marie's husband joined us then as well for the Easter weekend. We drove back to Dublin on Monday afternoon, and Gemma had her best long car journey yet- she didn't sleep at all, but she didn't get that fussy either! We had a wonderful break in Mayo and look forward to doing it again!

On Monday, March 25th we went to a pool at one of the hotels in Westport

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day was fairly quiet for us this year. Louisburgh did not have a parade due to a death in the community, and the weather was pretty awful, so we spent most of the day in the house. We did make a quick trip out to Paul's aunt and uncle's house to say hello, and after we got Gemma to bed we met two of our newly engaged friends for a couple of drinks.

Just because we didn't do much didn't mean Gemma didn't have a celebratory outfit!

Gemma's Christening

On Saturday, March 16th, Gemma was christened at Paul's home church in Louisburgh.  It was a long weekend for the St. Patrick's Day Bank Holiday, so we took advantage of that.  I was a little nervous about the trip down, as we hadn't done any traveling or staying away from home since we did the sleep training.  The journeys up and down were a bit rough, and the first bedtime was also a bit tearful, but by the time we left, Gemma was sleeping great at Paul's parent's house.

Gemma did great at her Christening too.  We had to wake her up from a nap to get ready to go, and once we gave her one of her new shoes to chew on, she was a happy girl!  She didn't cry or fuss once.  The dress that Gemma wore was a gift from Gran Sammin, and Paul wore the cardigan at his Christening.  Paul was christened when he was 2 weeks old, so his gown didn't quite fit Gemma!

After the service we had a lovely meal at the hotel/restaurant in Louisburgh where Paul and I had our Irish wedding reception.  One of the owner's wives took Gemma and gave her her bottle so that we could all enjoy our meals while they were hot.  She even got behind the bar!  Paul and I took her back to the house and put her to bed, then once she was asleep, Paul's mom stayed with her so that we could go back and socialize for the night.  It was great to have a night out!  We had a wonderful day celebrating Gemma's Christening.

Mother's Day

Today was Mother's Day here, and I had a wonderful day. Being a mother has been the best thing (and the most challenging!) that has ever happened to me. A friend of mine once described motherhood as walking around with a piece of your heart outside of your body, and I would have to agree. I give thanks for Gemma everyday.

Gemma is a very talented little girl, and gave me wonderful gifts yesterday (a bit early). I had a fabulous massage in the afternoon, then got flowers, a chocolate cake, and a card yesterday evening.

Today Paul got up with Gemma, so I got to relax in bed until after her first nap- nearly 11:00! It was wonderful!

7 Months!

Every month it is getting harder to get a picture with the lion! Gemma celebrated her 7 month birthday today! On Tuesday we had a developmental check with the public health nurse, and Gemma weighs 21 pounds, 6 ounces and is 29 inches long. Both of those are above the 95th percentile. In the last week I cleaned out her dresser and closet and put most of the 9 month clothes away, as she is wearing mostly 12-18 month clothes now, especially pants! The rest of the check with the nurse, including a hearing test, went very well, and Gemma passed everything with flying colors!

At 7 months, we can tell Gemma wants to be on the move more than she's able to, and she can get frustrated with this. On her tummy she can move herself in a circle and also backward a small bit. She has also attempted to bend a leg up to push herself forward, but no up on hands and knees yet. She can sit with her hands propped in front of her for support for awhile, and she now loves to throw herself backward when sitting on laps to hang upside down! She also likes to stand when we're holding her, and she can support herself quite well when we hold her at her waist.

We've started to introduce finger foods and continue to work on the sippy cup. Gemma loves her breakfast of a mashed up half of a weetabix (a cereal kind of like shredded wheat) mixed with formula, a small bit of prune juice, and some pears. Sweet potatoes and cottage pie are other favorites.

Gemma is starting to show a little independent streak and is showing and 'telling' us what she doesn't like. She likes to use her cup and sometimes her bottle herself and will let you know if she doesn't want help! She's had a bit of a stuffy nose the past week also, and when I try to put saline drops in or wipe her nose, she pushes me away a lot more than she did the last time she had a cold.

Her naps are becoming longer and a bit more predictable. She usually has her first nap between 9 and 9:30 and sleeps around an hour. Her second nap is usually between 12 and 12:30 and can last 45 minutes to an hour and a half- that one is a bit more variable. She has a catnap of 30-40 minutes between 3:30 and 4:30, then goes to bed between 6 and 7pm. She then sleeps until between 7 and 7:30am! Our hard work with the sleeping is definitely paying off!

As Gemma has been more rested, she's gotten happier and happier. She is such a fun, smiley little girl. I think the stranger anxiety that she was having a bit of last month was more due to being tired during the day, as we've been out and about seeing more people this past month, and Gemma has been great. The first thing she does in the morning is give a big smile, and it makes my day!

Here are some photos from the past month!
