3 Months Old!

On Saturday, Gemma was 3 months old! We took this picture a day late.



Yesterday the public health nurse came and did a 3 month check. Gemma is doing great developmentally- has good head control, coos and makes other noises, recognises me and my voice and tends to follow me with her eyes.

On the growth side of things, Gemma is thriving. She weighs 6.8 kg (15 pounds), and is 68 cm (26.8 inches) long. The nurse did the length twice, because she said most babies are 60 to 64 cm! That places Gemma at the 90th percentile for weight and above the 95th for length!

And, Gemma is now teething! I'm pretty sure I can see two little white bumps just below the surface of her bottom gums. She is drooling like crazy, and she is always sucking on her hands. At times she pulls away from her bottle too.

With regard to her reflux/milk protein intolerance, things are SOOO much better since we started the hypoallergenic formula, Nutramigen. She is content to sit in her rock and play or lay on her play mat when she is awake, and she smiles so much! She does get a little fussy when she gets tired, and she is definitely not one of those babies that can just fall asleep on their own though. That's okay by me, as I know the days that I can cuddle and rock her won't last long!

On Friday Gemma and I are off to Minnesota! Paul's mom very generously offered to fly over with us to help during the travels, and she'll be flying back a couple days later. Wish us luck!

Halloween

Gemma didn't have a costume this year, but she did have a couple outfits, bibs, socks, and a stuffed toy thanks to cousin Freya, auntie Margo, auntie Marie, and grandma Brenda. Here she is on Tuesday in her first outfit, very happy!

On Halloween we had another appointment with the paediatrician, as the losec (new reflux medication) doesn't seem to be making a huge difference after 3 weeks. Although the crying/screaming has lessened some, there is still more than what I would consider normal, and she continues to wake from a deep sleep with a look of pain and starts to cry. The paediatrician recommended a trial of a hypoallergenic formula called Nutramigen, as if this eases her symptoms, it would indicate a milk protein intolerance. This and reflux often go hand in hand, and Gemma has other symptoms of intolerance as well. She started the new formula yesterday morning, and even though he said it will take about two weeks for the old formula to wash out of her system, she has been easier to settle, has had a lot more smiles, and even napped out of my arms for 45 minutes this morning! Fingers crossed we will continue to see improvements! Gemma weighed 13 pounds 10 ounces at the appointment!

Last Weekend

Last weekend was a bank holiday weekend here, so we headed to Paul's parents in Louisburgh on Saturday morning. Gemma was great in the car again- slept almost the whole way there and back. She also had two great nights while we were there, sleeping about 6 1/2 hours at the start of the night both Saturday and Sunday nights. Unfortunately she was a bit fussy and had unsettled naps during the day.

On Sunday morning, while we were getting Gemma changed and dressed for the day, Paul told Gemma that they would be watching the Formula One Grand Prix later while Gemma had her bottle. She got a huge grin on her face! We then told her that she was so smart, and Paul told her that she gets it from him. She then gave a big scowl. So, I told her she gets her intelligence from me, and a big grin followed! It was hilarious!
